Description Culms 20-40cm tall. Leaves 2.5-4mm wide. Flowers male sikelets 1.5-3cm long at top, female spikelets 1-2cm long at side, flowering in April to June. Perennial plants.

Note Carex japonica Thunberg is not a synonym of Carex alopecuroides D. Don ex Tilloch et Taylor var. chlorostachya C. B. Clarke (syn. Carex chlorostachys Steven; Carex doniana Sprengel; Carex japonica Thunberg subsp. chlorostachys (Kükenthal) T. Koyama; Carex sasakii Hayata). Carex alopecuroides D. Don ex Tilloch et Taylor var. chlorostachya C. B. Clarke is far bigger species than Carex japonica Thunberg.
